Why Manta Island Resort Is An Angler’s Ultimate Escape
Glover’s Reef Atoll—an oval ring of coral approximately 52 miles in circumference smack in the middle of the Caribbean Sea–has long held its stronghold of being far-flung nirvana. Especially for fishermen. An astounding 800 coral patch reefs dot its waters, supporting extraordinarily high biological diversity across 135 square miles, but it’s the deep blue that holds all the allure. But who said going off-grid meant roughing it?
At about 36 miles off the coast of Southern Belize, pelagics like wahoo, blue marlin, and sailfish revel in the fact that Glover’s—a third of Belize’s atolls with only four found in the entire Western Hemisphere—is isolated by deep channels (400-2,000 m depth less than 2 km from the reef crest). In 1993, Glover’s Reef Atoll was declared a national protected area, ahead of becoming a special reserve in 2002 as a “high-priority” area and sanctuary for Nassau Grouper and other endangered marine life.
The result? Drag-screaming runs that’ll nearly spool under gunned tackle before settling into a back-and-forth fight. After, retreat to the destination worth every hand-cramping crank of the reel: Manta Island Resort.
Off The Grid Luxury
As the most remote atoll in Belize, trust us when we say the 2-hour boat ride is worth more than just a lit-up wahoo or airborne billfish. Opened in 2021, the 12-acre Manta Island features nine Private Oceanfront Cabanas and three 2-Bedroom Reef Villas, plunge pool included.
Family-friendly, there’s an infinity pool just off the Black Coral Bar & Restaurant area, WiFi, and non-motorized water sports like kayaks, snorkel gear, paddle-boarding, and more. And if your fishing crew decides to go with the luxe 2-bedroom reef villa, you’ll even get access to your own private plunge pool—aside from a full kitchen, living room, dining room, and two bedrooms. Plus, an onsite spa for post-sun pampering.
Fish for the day, then dock your boat to bring your fresh catch of ono or Mahi Mahi for the chefs at Black Coral Restaurant to prepare, just the way you like. Troll, deep drop, bait, cast, or even spear the fish of the lifetime in Glover’s Reef Atoll, while Manta Island Resort has the ‘experience of a lifetime’ part covered—every time.
